In recent years, the medicine and health sector has seen a significant surge of opportunities, and our Faculty has responded proactively to capitalise on them. We have embraced new technologies to increase our teaching and research activities, grown our connections with other institutions in the nation and around the world, and deepened our collaborations with local partners to extend the reach of our clinical services. All of this makes it a very exciting time to be associated with HKUMed! While I have the pleasure today of reporting on our latest advances, I would also like to ask you to remember the most important part of our mission – and the theme of my deanship – that is, People First. The idea of People First is easy to grasp. HKUMed’s achievements are first and foremost about the staff and students we recruit, and the support we offer them to constantly improve patient care. But how does that play out in person – in the clinic, the lab and the classroom? Today, alongside my regular reporting, I will relate to you some of the stories that illustrate the impacts of our efforts on individuals and the community – how we open our students’ eyes to the human side of medicine, how we work to translate scientific findings into something that can help people, and how we respond to the needs of the community.
