Advancing the MBBS New and Enriched Opportunities for Aspiring Doctors and Clinician-Scientists
The Enrichment Year, which had its first cohort in 2018/19, provides all Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students with a full year of life-enhancing experiences that make them more independent, more mature and ready to take charge. Meanwhile, the new four-year MBBS (Graduate Entry) track, to be launched in September, offers a pathway into medicine for degree-holders with a strong passion and aspiration to become doctors. It offers the same professional core components and assessment requirements as the accredited six-year MBBS programme, and an opportunity to diversify our student body to better serve Hong Kong’s varied patient population. Students of the new track can also opt to delve deeper into medical discovery through the Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med]), to work with world-class researchers and position themselves to become future clinician-scientists. Professor Chak-sing Lau, Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) and Dean of Medicine, has been a driving force behind these initiatives and believes that patients will ultimately benefit. ‘Medicine is advancing rapidly and so are Hong Kong’s needs for medical professionals. HKUMed keeps our programmes under constant review to ensure we can meet those needs. A key aim for us is to give our students opportunities for personal and professional development, alongside the rigorous education we provide. ‘The maturity and broader perspectives they acquire will benefit patients, research, medicine as a whole, and the students themselves,’ he said. ‘We are striving to address that need by providing talent who are highly competent and compassionate and by meeting the aspirations of young people to pursue meaningful careers in medicine.’ Professor Chak-sing Lau 5 HKUMed News Summer 2025
‘We have had great feedback from students – many feel it was their best year at HKUMed.’ Professor Kendrick Shih Co The Enrichment Year (EY) is a rare chance for students to immerse themselves in their interests, gain knowledge, and grow both personally and professionally, before the demands of clinical training set in. Currently, all medical students spend their third year pursuing activities in one or more of three areas: service/ humanitarian work, research attachment, and intercalation (earning a second degree or credits from free electives in a different field). To date, over 1,500 students have participated in the EY, with nearly 600 earning a second degree (including 59 with an MRes[Med]), while successfully completing over 270 service/ humanitarian projects and 470 research attachment projects across more than 45 countries and regions. The variety of their experiences has ranged from publishing research in The Lancet, earning an MSc from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and earning a certificate in cinematography from the New York Film Academy, to doing service work with Ukrainian war refugees in Poland, to give a small sample. Professor Kendrick Shih Co, Assistant Dean (Student Wellness & Engagement), who oversees the EY programme, said the experience gives students advantages in securing top jobs. ‘We are seeing our students want to make the best use of the year and equip themselves with skills and qualifications that go beyond what they can get in a medical degree programme,’ said Professor Shih. ‘In the Master’s degrees, for instance, they often interact with people who are more mature and experienced. This is a great learning experience for our students, who also gain skills that will be helpful in their careers.’ The Faculty offers guidance and support to help all students make the best of the year. New partners and modalities are also being added to keep pace with modern life, such as the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom which will offer a number of master’s degree programmes to our MBBS students in EY2026/27, and the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks where students will have the opportunity to work with several different companies to understand the nature of startups and innovation. ‘We have had great feedback from students – many feel it was their best year at HKUMed. New students are getting excited, too, and a lot of them are asking us how they can plan for the EY from their first year,’ Professor Shih added. Eye-opening Enrichment FEATURE 6

Hopefully they will grasp the basic science and clinical aspects more quickly and cope well with the demands of the MBBS.’ Professor Gordon Wong Tin-chun Maturity and diversity are also valued through the MBBS (Graduate Entry) track, which builds on the success of the Second Chance path launched a few years ago to admit students with a first degree in another discipline and allow them to complete studies in five years instead of six. ‘These postgraduate students appear mature, determined and focused. Hopefully they will grasp the basic science and clinical aspects more quickly and cope well with the demands of the MBBS,’ said Professor Gordon Wong Tin-chun, the newly appointed Associate Dean (Clinical Sciences Education), who is overseeing overall academic development. Professor Wong, along with Professor Siddharth Sridhar from the Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, will jointly look after the programme. The new track is four years instead of five and is designed with reference to similar programmes at other leading medical schools around the world, such as Cambridge and Oxford universities and medical schools in North America. It was approved by the University Grants Committee to commence this September and the programme update has been submitted to the Medical Council of Hong Kong. The initial intake of 25 students will do intensive pre-clinical training in their first year, then clinical training alongside peers in the six-year MBBS for the remaining three years. After the first year, those with an interest in research can also engage in cuttingedge research projects with world-class professors through the one-year MRes[Med], thereby completing two degrees in five years. ‘We have a strong network of teaching hospitals and comprehensive hardware and software support for all medical students. We will give them clinical training in both public and private hospitals in Hong Kong and other cities in the Greater Bay Area,’ Professor Wong explained. Master of Research in Medicine: A pathway for aspiring clinician-scientists The MRes[Med] is a stepping stone for all medical students to undertake original research and learn from top scholars. More than 100 HKUMed academics are in the top 2% of their fields worldwide, and 32 were named to the prestigious Highly Cited Researchers 2024 list by Clarivate Analytics. MRes[Med] students in the six-year MBBS programme typically do their data collection and other groundwork in the Enrichment Year, while those in Graduate Entry will start their research after their first year. All students have until graduation to write up their results and they will be awarded the MRes[Med] after completing the MBBS. Students also get exceptional exposure to the academic world. From 2018/19-2023/24, MBBS students gave 140 presentations at conferences, published 118 research papers, and received 29 prizes and 13 grants/ scholarships. ‘It’s very important for the growth of our Faculty that we can train up clinician-scientists who can understand research needs from the perspectives of both the bedside and the laboratory bench,’ Professor Lau said. FEATURE Our Dynamic Curriculum HKUMed has long been at the frontier of medical training in Hong Kong and Asia, which we are continuing to enhance with new technologies, including artificial intelligence, and other measures to prepare students for the future workplace. The EY and Graduate Entry track underscore our commitment to provide an innovative, dynamic curriculum that produces well-rounded medical professionals for both patient care and research. ‘As Hong Kong faces the challenges of an ageing population and a shortage of medical manpower, accelerating the training of talents has become an urgent task,’ Dean Lau said. ‘We are striving to address that need by providing talent who are highly competent and compassionate and by meeting the aspirations of young people to pursue a meaningful career in medicine.’ 8

優化醫學士課程 成就未來仁醫與臨床科學家 優秀的醫生不僅需要專業知識,還必須具備同理心與求知的熱忱。醫學院近年推出多元 創新舉措,不僅提升了畢業生的整體質素,更使他們在競爭激烈的醫療領域中脫穎而出。 具代表性的計劃之一是於2018/19學年啟動的「增潤學年」,為所有內外全科醫學士課程(MBBS) 學生提供一整年的充實體驗,從而培養他們的獨立性、成熟度和責任感。 與此同時,學院將於今年9月新增四年制MBBS第二學位入學途徑,專為持有學位且有志行醫者 設計。該課程核心與六年制MBBS一致,新途徑有助吸纳不同背景的學生,以更全面地服務香港 的病患群體。學生更可選修醫學研究碩士(MRes[Med])課程,跟隨頂尖學者開展研究。 副校長(健康)兼醫學院院長劉澤星教授是這些計劃的推動者。他說:「香港醫療需求日新月異, 我們必須持續優化課程,兼顧學生的專業訓練與個人發展,培育切合社會所需的醫護人才。學生 更趨成熟、具備更廣闊的視野,就能令患者、醫學研究、整體醫療環境,以至他們自身受益。」 FEATURE

Shaping a Future Clinician-Scientist 邁向臨床科學家之路 Year 3 MBBS student Henry began with a Biomedical Sciences degree at the Faculty, which gave him a solid grasp of anatomy, physiology, and pathology and a unique advantage when admitted to the MBBS programme. During his Enrichment Year, he went to the University of Cambridge where he immersed himself in an MPhil programme focused on infection biology and molecular immunology. He deepened his passion for immunology, which he had developed during his first degree. He also gained hands-on experience in translating scientific knowledge into real-world solutions. ‘The MPhil pushed me to ask deeper questions ― a mindset I now use daily in my medical studies,’ he reflected. Pioneering Medical Research at Harvard 哈佛醫研探索之旅 During her Enrichment Year, Ananya Jain embarked on a transformative journey at Harvard University, immersing herself in cutting-edge research at the Center for Engineered Therapeutics (the CET Lab). She focused on glucocorticoidinduced osteocyte dysfunction using advanced techniques like western blotting and flow cytometry. ‘The CET Lab at Harvard Medical School offered a unique blend of engineering, biology, and clinical medicine,’ said Ananya, ‘which was perfectly aligned with my fascination for advancing medical treatments.’ The time at Harvard was a pivotal period, in which she gained invaluable technical skills beyond the clinical aspects of the MBBS curriculum. ‘Working at the CET Lab deepened my appreciation for the meticulous science behind medical breakthroughs and reinforced my commitment to bridging research and patient care,’ she said. Over the course of the year, Isabella earned a diploma in cinematography, mastering lighting, rigging, equipment, and camera operation. She worked on diverse projects ― from advertisements and music videos to short films ― honing her craft through hands-on experience. One of her most unforgettable moments was braving the winter cold, waking at 1 am to drive to a beach in New Jersey to film a sunrise scene. ‘The freezing wind made it hard to even keep my eyes open,’ she recalled, ‘but seeing the final product made all the challenges worth it.’ Throughout the year, she not only gained valuable skills, but also had the opportunity to collaborate with industry professionals. Experience in Vanuatu Accelerates Growth 瓦努阿圖經歷加速成長 After enrolling in HKUMed’s Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences in 2016, Dr Ryan Lee secured one of only two articulation spots in the MBBS programme in 2018 ― graduating with both degrees in eight years. His unique trajectory allowed him to alternate between biomedical sciences and clinical training, deepening his understanding of medicine from multiple perspectives. ‘My biomedical background gave me a head start in the MBBS programme,’ said Dr Lee, ‘I could connect lab research to patient care, which made complex concepts click faster.’ He credits his dual training for fostering a holistic approach to medicine. He worked alongside clinicians from diverse specialties, supported daily clinic operations, and assisted in a diabetes research project. Outside the clinic, weekends on Tutuba Island profoundly impacted him. ‘Snorkelling and fishing with the children revealed a selfsufficient community whose joy came from simplicity and connection,’ he reflected. From Radiation Therapy to Medicine: A Journey of Confidence and Purpose 從放射治療到醫學: 一段充滿信心與使命的旅程 Jane credits her first degree in Radiation Therapy from the University of Toronto for shaping her confidence, determination, and patient care skills. Admitted through HKUMed’s Second Chance Scheme for degree holders, Jane’s journey reflects the value of prior academic and professional experience in medical training. ‘I approached the MBBS programme with more determination and readiness to contribute,’ said Jane, highlighting how her first degree helped her re-evaluate her interests and solidify her passion for medicine. Her clinical exposure during her radiation therapy internship in Canada was invaluable, making her more confident during ward visits and patient interactions. Her first degree also gave her an edge in anatomy classes, allowing her to grasp concepts more quickly. During his Enrichment Year, he pursued the Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med]), a decision that significantly shaped his professional path. ‘I have always been drawn to advancements in medical science,’ said Dr Hsu. The MRes[Med] enabled him to engage in research, leading to his first publication in Hypertension. The research team’s study on the gut microbiome’s role in hypertension gained recognition from the American Heart Association. Attending conferences and interacting with global experts further enriched his perspective. ‘The MRes[Med] expanded my opportunities and strengthened my career prospects,’ Dr Hsu stated. HKUMed held an appreciation dinner on 13 March 2025 to express its gratitude to the donors of its Endowed Professorships. The event was officiated by Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Gong Peng, Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development), and Professor Chak-sing Lau, Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) and Dean of Medicine. The attending donors and HKUMed staff enjoyed a warm and cordial atmosphere during the evening. The University of Hong Kong established the Endowed Professorships Scheme in 2005. Since its inception, the Scheme has become one of the most significant awards bestowed upon eminent academics within the University in support of their academic and research activities. Over 120 Endowed Professorships have been established at HKU, with more than half of them at HKUMed. On 26 May, Dean Professor Chak-sing Lau led a pivotal session titled ‘Unlocking the Potential of AI in Healthcare’ at the Asia Summit on Global Health. Co-organised by the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the session convened experts in computer science, medical data science and AI, along with representatives from the government and healthcare sectors. The discussion explored AI's transformative impact across medical research, education and healthcare services. Further highlighting HKUMed's expertise, on the following day, Professor Stephanie Ma Kwai-yee, University Associate Vice-President (Research and Innovation) (also with Biomedical Sciences), and Professor Brian Chung Hon-yin (Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, SClinMed) addressed cancer evolution and the urgent need for rare diseases treatments. Building on this momentum, HKUMed reinforced Hong Kong's status as a burgeoning biotech hub at BIO 2025 in Boston from 16 to 19 June. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Global Health Institute (HKJCGHI), a collaborative effort between the University of Hong Kong, the International Vaccine Institute, and the University of Cambridge, held its inaugural symposium on ‘Advancing Global Health Through Scientific Innovation’ earlier this year. Over 110 academic and industry experts gathered to discuss pressing health challenges and pandemic preparedness, with esteemed speakers sharing their insights on 100-Day Mission of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), breakthroughs in vaccine development―including AI-driven innovations, pneumococcal vaccines, and real-world effectiveness data. The symposium underscored HKJCGHI’s commitment to fostering collaboration and driving progress in global health. Oral-ATO as the new standard of care in APL The drug oral-ATO – which stands for oral formulation of arsenic trioxide – has already been shown in local and regional trials to be an effective cure for acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL). Recently, it obtained orphan drug designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA), which recognise that the drug is a promising treatment for this rare disease. ‘Oral-ATO is a game-changer for APL patients because it is life-saving, cost-effective and preserves patients’ quality-of-life, and we take great pride in seeing our research translated into practice in Hong Kong and elsewhere. Our aim is to make APL a curable disease for patients around the world,’ said Professor Harinder Gill, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, SClinMed, who is now the lead investigator on the drug. A Long Road from Lab Bench to Patient Care But the journey to this stage has been long and involved multiple generations of scholars carrying the research forward. It all started back in 1997 when Professor Kwong Yok-lam, Chair of Haematology/ Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, sought to make something old – and highly toxic – new again. The ‘something’ was arsenic, a substance often associated with murder in history. Arsenic trioxide was used in medicine for centuries but fell out of favour over its toxicity. However, in 1997 Professor Kwong read an article about the successful use of intravenous arsenic trioxide in treating leukaemia patients in Shanghai. He brought the article to his supervisor Professor David Todd, who recalled the successful use of oral arsenic trioxide in the early 1950s in Hong Kong. Professor Kwong confirmed the case. However, it was difficult to import medicine from the mainland at the time, and inspired by the 1950s case, he decided to develop an oral rather than intravenous formulation of arsenic trioxide. He teamed up with Professor Cyrus Kumana (now Emeritus), who was then chief in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, to work on creating the oral formulation. Over the next three years, the team overcame challenges such as sourcing pharmaceutical grade arsenic trioxide powder, controlling its solubility and securing ethics approval, until they had a preparation that they felt could be safe and effective for patients. An unusual clinical trial was then organised. ‘We had no recourse to prior testing in normal volunteers because they would be unlikely to take arsenic. And there was no recourse to comparison with a placebo or dummy treatment. Instead, we treated patients with relapsed APL who were very, very sick,’ said Professor Kumana. Outstanding Clinical Results The results, which were followed up in a 15-year prospective study, found that among more than 80 relapsed patients treated with oral-ATO, there was a molecular remission rate of 100% and a five-year overall survival rate of 80%. Importantly, they were also able to show that oral-ATO had a bioavailability comparable with intravenous ATO. The team then tested oral-ATO as a maintenance treatment of APL patients in complete remission.
