Going on exchange gives you the opportunity to challenge yourself academically, participate in collaborative research, explore new cultures, and make lifelong friends and memories. Be at the forefront of healthcare innovation: From AI-assisted diagnosis and wearable health technologies to advanced therapeutics, neurotechnology, and precision medicine, you’ll be part of solutions that redefine how diseases are prevented, diagnosed, and treated. Be in demand across diverse sectors: Biomedical engineering graduates are highly sought after across the healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and technology sectors, as well as in research organisations and public agencies. Be equipped to make an impact: Your interdisciplinary expertise and strong innovation mindset will prepare you to translate scientific discoveries into real-world technologies that transform patient care and improve health outcomes globally. MAKE YOUR LEARNING GLOBAL WHERE YOUR DEGREE CAN TAKE YOU BEng(BME) Year 2 student I came to HKU expecting to focus on just one area, but Biomedical Engineering has allowed me to explore across disciplines. In one summer, I worked on a hardware timing system in a neuroscience lab and fabricated microfluidic chips in another. Different projects, but the same lesson: great research starts with getting the fundamentals right. Having access to hands-on research from an early stage is what makes studying BME at HKUMed truly distinctive. BEng(BME) Year 4 student Overseas exchange at the University of California, Davis Learning doesn’t stay in one place, and we were never meant to either. My experiences at Stanford, the University of Toronto, and UC Davis have shown me that growth comes from stepping into entirely different environments. Learning from world-class talent, seeing how others approach problems, and understanding how they think, learn, and even play, all ultimately contribute to our shared goal as future biomedical engineers, honing our knowledge, creativity, and intellect into projects that uplift humanity and improve lives. Charles Wong My studies have given me a foundation in engineering, physiology, medical imaging, and healthcare technology, while encouraging me to consider how technical solutions function in real clinical settings and how even a single error can profoundly affect a patient’s life. This perspective has taught me that healthcare demands not only innovation but also clinical judgement, accountability, and empathy. Studying biomedical engineering at HKU has therefore inspired me to pursue medicine and contribute to translating technological advances into patientcentred care. Katherine Chen BEng(BME) Year 4 Student Articulating to the MBBS programme in 2027/28 Professor Chan’s journey into biomedical engineering began with a passion for using technology to improve human health. As the founder of E-SENSE, he uses AI-driven multimodal biomedical imaging to transform the management of emergent and chronic organ diseases. Professor Chan continues to give back to HKU through internships, project supervision, and alumni leadership. He believes AI and imaging will change the future of healthcare through faster diagnoses, more personalised treatments, and better outcomes for communities. Russell Chan (Honorary) Professor BEng(BME) graduate Founder of E-SENSE Chair of the HKU Biomedical Engineering Alumni Association Biomedical engineering touches everything – from imaging and devices to IP law and venture capital. The most impactful innovations come from blending disciplines.
