At HKUMed, we are united by a shared commitment to advancing health and improving lives through excellence in education, research, and service. As a leading faculty dedicated to health, medicine, and biomedical innovation, we prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals, scientists, and leaders to address the evolving challenges of health and wellbeing in Hong Kong, the region, and beyond. While science and technology continue to transform healthcare, the essence of our work remains deeply human. Whether caring for patients, conducting research, developing new therapies, or serving communities, our graduates are guided by professionalism, ethical responsibility, MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN HKUMed researchers have developed the world’s first nasal spray for ischemic stroke – a portable, easy-to-use intervention that protects the brain during the first critical moments after a stroke. By bypassing the blood-brain barrier, it delivers neuroprotective medication directly to the brain. In preclinical studies, administration within 30 minutes of a stroke reduced brain damage by more than 80% while preserving neurological function. The award-winning innovation could transform stroke treatment worldwide and pave the way for new therapies for other brain disorders. Led by Professor Aviva Chow Shing-fung of HKUMed’s Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy and Dr Shao Zitong of the InnoHK Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Centre (ABIC). The nasal spray enables patients to receive early protection en route to hospital, significantly slowing the death of brain cells and buying valuable time for subsequent treatments. Professor Aviva Chow Shing-fung LEARN TODAY, LEAD TOMORROW Consistently ranked among the world’s top medical institutions, HKUMed is at the forefront of medical education and research. Through a strong commitment to professional integrity, innovative thinking, and teaching excellence, we prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals to make a lasting impact. Designed to support HKUMed’s growing student community, the new Clinical Training and Amenities Centre (CTAC) will bring together: The new centre will devote 70% of its space to student accommodation and 30% to medical teaching, enabling HKUMed to accommodate an annual intake of 700 medical and nursing students. “Medical students require continuous exposure to the hospital ward environment so they can acquire clinical skills and patient contact experience. So, staying close to the teaching hospital will bring immense benefits to senior medical students,” Professor Chan Ying-shing, Senior Advisor to the Dean cum Director of Campus Development and Infrastructure, explained. Part of HKU’s ten-year expansion plan for the Sassoon Road campus, this development will provide more space for living and learning as our annual medical student intake grows from 295 in 2025 to 325 by 2028. HOW CAN FUTURE DOCTORS BETTER UNDERSTAND DEATH, DYING, AND LOSS? Since 2022, Samson Wong, Assistant Lecturer at Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit, has pioneered the use of the video game "That Dragon, Cancer" in medical humanities education for second-year MBBS students. Through this immersive learning experience, students gain insight into the emotional journey of families facing terminal illness, followed by guided discussions that encourage reflection on grief, empathy and compassionate care. Led by HKUMed humanities educator Mr Samson Wong Ki-sum, the initiative has gained international recognition, including Times Higher Education’s Most Innovative Teacher of the Year in Asia and a Gold Award for Nurturing Wellbeing and Purpose at the QS Reimagine Education Awards 2025. Across the first five years of the MBBS, students develop the ethical reasoning and legal understanding to address sensitive issues and responsibilities in medical practice by exploring real-world cases through discussion, debate, and interactive learning. Through literature, film, the arts, and experiential learning, students explore five themes across the six-year MBBS curriculum: At HKUMed, becoming a doctor is about more than mastering medical knowledge and clinical skills. Our students learn how to handle complex ethical issues and develop the professionalism, compassion, and respect to put patients at the heart of their care. THE VALUES BEHIND GREAT MEDICINE MEDICAL ETHICS AND LAW MEDICAL HUMANITIES LEARNING TO FACE GRIEF WITH COMPASSION HKUMed surgeons have introduced robot-assisted microsurgery in Hong Kong, successfully completing 48 procedures, including the world’s first robot-assisted living donor liver transplant and trans-hairline robotic microvascular surgery. The robotic platform enhances precision through tremor filtration, motion scaling and advanced visualisation, enabling surgeons to operate on delicate structures in confined spaces. Clinical outcomes showed no robot-related complications, while the technology also supports faster training of future surgeons, helping expand access to highly specialised microsurgical care. Led by HKUMed research team Dr Velda Chow Ling-yu and Professor Albert Chan Chi-yan. Our world-first application of robotic microsurgery in liver transplantation has set a new benchmark in the field. STUDENT RESEARCH SHARING IN GREECE WHERE YOUR DEGREE CAN TAKE YOU Your Bachelor of Chinese Medicine degree will qualify you to sit for the Chinese Medicine Practitioners Licensing Examination in Hong Kong. Passing the exam allows you to register as a Chinese Medicine practitioner with the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong. Together with my classmates Ng Wing Shui and Ngai Chun Ho, we were invited to present our research paper, ‘The Impacts of Using a Digital 3D Anatomy Tool in Learning Acupuncture’, at the 2026 International Conference on Information Communication Technologies in Education. Our paper was selected as one of the five finalists and accepted for publication in jeXed. Having the opportunity to share our work on an international stage was truly unforgettable and reaffirmed our belief that technology can greatly enrich Chinese Medicine education, transforming how students visualise and engage with the subject. We are genuinely grateful to the School of Chinese Medicine for making this experience possible. BChinMed Year 5 student Lam Kwo Sin Edwin Wu BChinMed Class of 2024 & intercalated Master of Public Health Chinese Medicine is where Eastern and Western ideologies clash, coexist, and cooperate for the betterment of healthcare, where evidence-based rigour meets holistic wisdom to shape future-ready practitioners. From prevention to policy, from the individual to the public, we learn to think critically and lead collaboratively across disciplines and cultures. Join a cohort that challenges assumptions, embraces diversity, and advances integrative care with purpose and integrity. Our BChinMed students have taken their learning beyond the classroom through exchange programmes at the University of Rostock in Germany, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Hunan University of Chinese Medicine, and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China, as well as visits to places such as Hangzhou, Sichuan, Changchun. In July 2026, a group of students travelled to Greece to present their research project at the International Conference on Information Communication Technologies in Education (ICICTE), sharing their findings with researchers and educators from around the world. Annie Leung BChinMed Class of 2011 & full member of the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, UK BChinMed Year 6 student My cultural exchange at the University of Rostock in Germany was a memorable trip where I witnessed stark differences in healthcare and culture. Palliative care highlighted the value of life and the ethics of medical practitioners. Local professors’ insights on acupuncture inspired me to integrate Eastern and Western medicine. It is a great honour to be an alumnus of the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine programme at HKU. The curriculum encompassed not only foundational knowledge in Chinese and modern medicine but also public health, statistics, and health economics. These experiences and skills have equipped me to become a professional practitioner in the UK, where I’ve been able to establish my own business and build strong connections with local communities. Looking ahead, I hope to share the philosophy of Chinese Medicine – such as acupuncture and herbal remedies – with a global audience. At the same time, I aspire to explore other cultural medical traditions, including Indian and Western herbal practices, to broaden my knowledge base, continue learning, and refine my theoretical approach. Some classmates have pursued careers in pharmaceutical development, helping bring new medications to market, while others work with wholesalers and manufacturers, specialising in drug handling, storage, and quality control. EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITY Experience in one of our partner universities and hospitals in Chinese Mainland. CONNECT WITH THE WORLD OF PHARMACY WHERE YOUR DEGREE CAN TAKE YOU The Bachelor of Pharmacy programme at HKU is more than learning about medicines – it’s about understanding the pharmacist’s role in patient care and public health. The early clinical exposure helped me connect theory to real-world healthcare settings, while presentations, case studies, and patient simulations taught me to think critically and communicate effectively. Most importantly, the programme has shaped me into a more empathetic and responsible future healthcare professional. I'm proud to be part of a community that’s passionate about improving lives through pharmacy. BPharm Class of 2023 Helen Chan Throughout my studies at HKU, I gained handson experience in hospitals, community pharmacies, and pharmaceutical companies, which deepened my understanding of the local healthcare system and strengthened my skills in pharmacy practice. Participating in exchange programmes at Kumamoto University in Japan and a notfor-profit healthcare organisation in Australia also broadened my horizons, giving me valuable insights into pharmacy development around the world.
